Planning doc for if I ever shut down queer.party

Stages

(given T is the decided shut-down date)

T-3Month

• Invites are disabled

T-2Month

• Email sent to all active accounts with link to the announcement

T-1Month

• Email sent to all active accounts again

T-1Week

• Email sent to remaining active accounts

T+0

• Code changes to make instance read-only - only functionality that should still work is logging in, exporting account backups, and deletion of data

T+1Month

• Instance self-destruct initiated, all data completely expunged.

• Website replaced with tombstone page

T+2Month

• Last good backups prior to self-destruct are removed.

tl;dr at the moment that the announcement is made, no new signups will be accepted, emails will be sent to active accounts at monthly intervals and then a final email the week before. at time of cessation of service, a modified build of mastodon will be deployed that permits only login, account backup access, migration, and deletion of any and all content. one month after instituting read-only mode, instance self-destruct will be triggered after final backups are taken, and website will show a tombstone page. two months after read-only mode, those backups are deleted, and queer.party will be gone.
